The study involved three samples of participants: (a) undergraduates with high levels of interest in art, (b) an adult sample of art enthusiasts recruited by CloudResearch, and (c) a sample of faculty, staff, and students affiliated with United States visual and performing arts (VPA) departments and art schools, as well as people involved with and arts organizations in the Cleveland, OH area. A total of 119 participants completed the study.
The study included an online survey and an interview. The survey asked about expertise and experience in art, as well as personal beliefs and personality. Artists completed one of two interviews about a meaningful experience with art. One interview was about creating an artwork (i.e., Creation Interview). The other interview was about interacting with art created by others (i.e., Interaction Interview). Interviews were conducted via Zoom or by responding to written prompts in an online survey.
The interviews asked participants to describe the experiences, what they were thinking and feeling during the experience, and what the experience meant to them. We asked about why participants pursued the experience, high and low points in the experience, and about what they learned. For the questions about learning, we focused on whether participants came to any new spiritual or transcendent understandings, including understandings about authentic self-discovery and ultimate meaning. We also asked about perceived supernatural influences in the experience.
