The study involved an adult sample of art enthusiasts recruited by CloudResearch. Nearly 700 participants completed the study.
Participants completed an online survey that was similar to the one we used in Study 1: It included questions about art expertise and experience, as well as personal beliefs and personality. Also similar to Study 1, this study asked participants about an emotionally meaningful experience with art (i.e., Art Story), either about creating an artwork (Creation Story) or interacting with art created by others (Interaction Story). Rather than completing a relatively long interview about the Art Story, participants in Study 2 wrote a short Art Story, consisting of about 1-2 paragraphs, in response to a prompt within the online survey. The prompt asked participants to describe the experience in detail and about any understandings they gained about themselves, others, and the world. The prompt also asked specifically about spiritual understandings related to authenticity and ultimate meaning, as well as about any perceived supernatural experiences.
