CloudResearch recruited an adult sample for this study. Participants included art enthusiasts as well as people who did not report high levels of interest in art. Nearly 2,000 participants completed the study.
This study involved a survey that was similar to those used in Studies 1 and 2: It included questions about art expertise and experience, as well as personal beliefs and personality. However, unlike the previous studies, we did not ask about an Art Story. Rather, we asked participants to describe their life story about their relationship to religion and spirituality.
Importantly, participants did not need to be religious or spiritual themselves. They could talk about their thoughts and feelings about religion/spirituality even if they did not have religious/spiritual beliefs. We encouraged participants to (a) think about their relationship to religion/spirituality as if it were a book, (b) describe what the main chapters in the book might be, and (c) write briefly about each chapter.
Similar to the Art Story interviews, the prompt for the story about religion/spirituality asked about any understandings that participants gained about themselves, others, and the world. It also asked specifically about spiritual understandings related to authenticity and ultimate meaning, as well as about any perceived supernatural experiences.
